Since independence, India has held 17 general elections, and in 2024, we are celebrating the 18th festival of elections from April 19 to June 1, 2024, in seven phases, to elect 543 members of the Lok Sabha. The votes will be counted, and the results will be declared on June 4, 2024.
As the largest democracy globally, the world looks at us with hope during these elections. General elections are a crucial part of Indian democracy. Through these elections, we have an opportunity to elect representatives who will work for us, better their constituencies, and ultimately contribute to nation-building.
General elections are the only time in five years when we pause to reflect on the previous term of the ruling party. We assess whether the promises made in their manifesto have been fulfilled. Based on their performance, we rethink the candidature of the Members of Parliament (MPs) and the ruling party. If they do not align with our expectations, we have alternative options.
As per the constitution, India is a secular and democratic nation, and elections are celebrated as a festival here. We are the largest democracy in the world. The 2024 elections are challenging for both the ruling party and the opposition. Modi and the BJP are still strong contenders, but the opposition, especially Rahul Gandhi and the INDI ALLIANCE, has become a headache for the ruling party.
The construction of the Ram Mandir has been a major agenda for the ruling party, which has highlighted it to capture the vote bank based on religion. While this is commendable, in a secular and democratic nation, it is not the sole focus. We as country need to discuss development, growth, opportunities, and more.
As the face of the ruling party for the third term, Narendra Modi has been a star campaigner for the BJP. He has been tirelessly conducting election rallies, roadshows, and interviews, working as a man on a mission for the BJP. However, instead of focusing on the achievements of the last 10 years and what the BJP has done for India, the ruling party and its campaigners often bring up religious rivalries, caste-based politics, and reservation issues as focus issues for the 2024 elections. As per peoples opinion Modi, as the face of the ruling party, should focus more on the development and growth of the nation.

On the other hand, the opposition is highlighting the failures of the present government, which is natural. A strong opposition is essential for a healthy democracy, and India currently enjoys such an atmosphere. The 2024 elections are not easy for the BJP, as the opposition has several points to challenge the NDA (National Democratic Alliance). Rahul Gandhi and his Bharat Jodo Yatra have been subjects of debate for the ruling party. The transformation of him and his party in the past few years is commendable, appearing as an older version of Congress.
The main battle in the general elections in India is between the BJP-led NDA and the INC-led INDI ALLIANCE. Both alliances have their own manifestos and strategies. It is up to the voters to choose the right one for them. Each voter in a democracy has the right to choose what is best for them, strengthening democracy.
The 2024 general elections are memorable for many reasons. It has a history of unforgettable events like Article 370, the enforcement directorate (ED) and its use or misuse, political crises in major states like Maharashtra (Thackeray-Shinde, Pawar-Pawar), constitution amendment by the ruling party, Ram Mandir, unemployment, caste-based reservation, and more, which are hot topics for these elections.
India has never witnessed such political and social disturbances during elections before. Now, it is up to the voters to decide the fate of the country.
As an aspiring political enthusiast, I always interested in politics. I've several questions regarding present elections such as, Who will get the majority on June 4? Will my candidate whom I vote for win or lose their seat? Who will take the majority in Maharashtra? Who will win in Beed, Baramati, and so on?
All the answers will be clear on June 4.
With this note we all have to wait for June 4!
Until next time,
Gaurav S. Patil
