May 1 has really special importance in Maharashtra. It was only when the state being came into existence after it was carved out of the Bombay state (Maha+Gujrat). The remaining part of the Bombay State now known as Gujrat State. Coincidently both these states celebrates their existence on the same day.
Both of these states were gone through the major protest before getting separated. Finally on May 1, 1960 both of these states were created on linguistic lines.
Maharashtra: For Marathi people's
Gujrat: For Gujarati people's
During the time of Independence India was divided into numerous provinces and princely states, after getting indepdence the work to reorganise these states into union of India through the state reorganization act, 1956 was taken by Sardar Patel.
Upto this time the despute between these two states was gone to its peak.
The act was designed in such manner that it proposed reorganising states based on the languages spoken in the particular area/region. Herein the Bombay state was established for the ones who spoke Marathi, Gujarati, Konkani, and Kutchi.
After late Independence in Bombay state two groups were emerged, one comprises Marathi and Konkani while other includes Gujarati and Kutchi.
Based on their majority a long protest was occurred as they began to demand that they being granted their own state.
As a result, Bombay state was dissolved, and and two separate states were formed on this day in 1960 on the basis of linguistics culture.

The name itself indicates the importance of state. i.e Maha-Rashtra.
Being the India's largest commercial and industrial hub, Maharashtra is recognised as the gateway of India.
The brave warriors like Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Chatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, Mahatma Phule, Shahu Maharaj etc are born in MH. The land of Maharashtra was enormously gifted with inborn talents and teachings of numerous Saints like Saint Ramadas, Saint Tukaram, Saint Namdev, Saint Dynaneshwar and so on. These Saints have created a long life impact of their lives on peoples, the have beautifully evacuated the social and political aspects of people's and bring major changes in the society. Which ultimately leads Maharashtra as better State. The teachings of these people's are still considered as cornerstone in shaping the future of state.
Maharashtra has not only influence on India but also on the world, which was only due to the brave Maratha warriors who, flew their flag of bravery beyond the boundaries of Maharashtra, hence Marathas have acquired prominent position in the history.
No other state can matched the legacy of Maratha warriors against the British and Mughals in that particular period. What Maharashtra had did with these evils was very powerful task. And only few have this skill.
